3 Minute Read:

There are many popular facial rejuvenation procedures for patients seeking a fresher, more youthful look. Thanks to modern techniques, facial procedures today present less risk of scarring, although it’s impossible to completely eliminate scars.

While some scarring may exist following facial surgery, there are ways to minimize their visibility, making them nearly impossible to detect.

What Are Some Popular Facial Procedures?

As we age, the skin and tissues in the face and neck loosen, making some changes in your facial aesthetics inevitable. Your genes, habits, and sun exposure can also affect the appearance of your face.

Facelift Surgery

A facelift rejuvenates the overall appearance of the face and neck by tightening the underlying tissues of the midface, lower face, and neck.

While facelift surgery involves lengthy incisions that run from the hairline to down and around the ears, these incisions are camouflaged by the hair and natural creases in the skin.

Brow Lift Surgery

A brow lift raises the position of the brow to provide a more refreshed appearance. The traditional brow lift uses an incision across the forehead at the natural hairline. This placement allows for the resulting scar to be hidden in that natural partition.

Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, corrects drooping eyelids and improves undereye puffiness.

For upper eyelid surgery, the incision is hidden in your lid’s crease so that the scars are hidden inside these natural folds. For lower eyelid surgery, Dr. Boll can choose a less noticeable spot along your lash line.

In either case, Dr. Boll will use fine sutures to minimize scar visibility.

How Can I Reduce Scarring After My Facial Procedures?

Protect Your Skin From Sun

Sun protection is always important, but it’s especially crucial to protect scars from damaging UVA and UVB rays. These can cause discoloration, which makes scarring more noticeable, especially during the first year of healing.

Shield facial scars with a stylish hat or use a high-quality sunscreen with an SPF of at least 35 daily. Remember to reapply if you are swimming or exercising.

Be Gentle to Your Incisions

Avoid lifting, moving, or doing stretches that could put too much tension on your incisions during your initial recovery. Although facial incisions do not experience the same trauma as body contouring incisions, they can still be affected by strenuous exercise.

Stress in these areas can pull the tissue apart, which delays the healing process and can affect scar formation. Give yourself time to heal and follow your doctor’s instructions for the best results.

Use Recommended Topical Treatments

Your doctor may recommend topical creams or serums to reduce scarring. These products hydrate and smooth the affected area to help even out the skin.

Look for ingredients like silicone, vitamin E oil, and allantoin, which are known to soften and moisturize healing skin.
