2 Minute Read:

Dermal fillers and neuromodulators are highly effective minimally invasive treatments for restoring younger-looking facial contours. The two treatments involve injecting age-defying solutions; however, as they are made of compounds that work differently, they produce varying outcomes. Since one treatment may be better in accomplishing your specific aesthetic goals, it is necessary to understand what these treatments address and how they work.

What Are Neuromodulators and How Do They Work?

Neuromodulators are readily known by its most popular brand, BOTOX® Cosmetic. Neuromodulators, including BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport®, relax the muscles and help to combat fine lines, crow’s feet, and wrinkles in the face and neck.

Neuromodulators are specifically made to temporarily freeze the nerves by blocking the receptors in the muscle that receive movement signals from the brain. When injected in the targeted muscles, these muscles relax, preventing the repetitive movements that are the source of fine lines and wrinkles.

These formulas provide results that last around three months. Injections are most effective on the forehead, brow, and eye area; however, they can be used around the mouth or neck. Touch-up or repeated treatments will be needed to maintain the results.

What Are Dermal Fillers and How Do They Work?

Dermal fillers, such as JUVÉDERM®, RADIESSE®, and Restylane® Refyne™ or Defyne™, help to improve volume loss, fine lines, and wrinkles. Unlike BOTOX® Cosmetic, dermal fillers are designed to reverse the aging process by restoring volume and fullness to the face.

The formula is often composed of hyaluronic acid gel or calcium-based microspheres suspended in a water-based gel. These compounds add volume to places where it has been lost and help to soften lines, wrinkles, and folds in the face. It’s perfect for deflated cheeks and lips or hollows under the eyes. Depending on the type of filler used, results can last anywhere between six months and two years.

Are Dermal Fillers or Neuromodulators Better for Me?

Dermal fillers and neuromodulators are tailored to target specific areas. Therefore, choosing between the two will primarily depend on the area being treated and the desired changes to your anatomy. Regardless of choice, the secret to beautiful results is working with a board-certified plastic surgeon who understands how different substances affect the facial tissues.

Some patients will significantly benefit from combining the two treatment options, so it’s crucial to work with your surgeon to ensure the best balance of treatment. A major advantage of each of these treatment options is that there is no downtime involved, meaning patients can resume their normal activities right after treatment.
