Week-by-Week Recovery Timeline for Breast Augmentation
Whether you receive saline, silicone, or Motiva® breast implants, breast augmentation is still a surgical procedure that requires proper rest and wellness. Giving your body the time and space it needs for convalescence is essential to ensuring a safe recovery with the best possible results. Healing milestones mark each stage to help you gauge where your body is in the recovery process.
Week 1
The first week of recovery is characterized by swelling, bruising, chest tightness, and soreness. However, these symptoms will improve as your body recovers. The first week also comes with the most restrictions, such as avoiding heavy lifting and refraining from raising your arms above your shoulders.
Patients should sleep with their head elevated, and light walking helps promote blood circulation and may lower the risk of blood clots. You will wear a surgical bra to support your breasts and help minimize swelling and excess fluid in the chest. It’s important to wear the surgical bra as instructed.
Weeks 2–3
During this stage of breast augmentation recovery, you may feel more like yourself as swelling begins to subside and discomfort significantly decreases. However, the breasts may still sit high due to tight muscles and can still feel firm as they settle into their new position. Patients can expect to return to light activities. You should feel comfortable resuming desk jobs or remote positions, as well as attending small social gatherings or running errands.
Weeks 4–6
At this point, most of the swelling has subsided, and your breast implants begin to soften and settle into a natural position, allowing you to appreciate your breast augmentation results. Your surgeon may also clear you to reintroduce exercise into your routine gradually.
Months 2–3 and Beyond
Once you’re a few months into recovery, you have reached a new milestone: final refinements! By this stage, the breast tissue continues to relax as the breasts achieve their final shape, size, and feel over the coming months. Any lingering swelling should be resolved, and patients can expect their breast augmentation scars to begin fading and physical restrictions to be lifted.
