Whether from weight fluctuations or pregnancy, changes to the midsection can affect your self-esteem. If you have started looking for looser shirts and sweaters to hide your expanding abdomen, a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) may be the right choice for you. This surgical procedure requires some recovery afterward but produces dramatic, long-lasting improvements. We’ll walk you through the recovery time for a tummy tuck step by step so you know what to expect after your surgery.

Early Tummy Tuck Recovery: First 48 Hours

You will experience bruising, swelling, and some discomfort immediately following your surgery. A compression garment helps reduce swelling and should be worn for about six weeks. The first couple of days will consist of resting and taking pain medication as needed to manage discomfort. Dr. Boll provides patients with post-op instructions to ensure a positive start to the healing process.

The First Week After Abdominoplasty

During the first week of tummy tuck recovery, your mobility will be significantly limited since you won’t be able to stand up straight for several weeks. We encourage patients to begin walking as soon as possible to prevent clots, which may be easier using a walker. You will also need to sleep at a slight incline for several weeks, using pillows or a reclining chair.

One Month After Tummy Tuck Surgery

By the end of the first month, you will be walking straighter and sleeping flat. Discomfort will improve substantially, and your activity level will gradually increase. Many patients return to work and can perform low-impact exercises during this time, but it’s important to listen to your body and rest when you feel tired. The combination of activity and relaxation is the ideal prescription for a healthy tummy tuck recovery.

First Three Months Post Tummy Tuck

During this stage of your tummy tuck recovery, you will begin to feel more like yourself as your energy levels rise and your surgery side effects fully subside. You will be back to your regular workout program, work schedule, and doing all the activities you love. You will begin to see the results of your procedure due to reduced swelling; you can now observe your new body contour. Your scar will also begin to soften and fade, becoming less visible over time.

Incision Care During Your Tummy Tuck Recovery Time

Part of your tummy tuck recovery time will be spent caring for your incision to minimize scarring once it heals. Incision care steps might include:

  • Keeping the incision sites clean to prevent infection
  • Wearing your compression garment as instructed
  • Using topical silicone or strips to keep the incision soft
  • Protecting the incision from sun exposure
  • Using gentle massage to break down scar tissue

Dr. Boll provides patients with specific aftercare instructions to ensure incisions heal well and remaining scars are less noticeable.

One Year After Tummy Tuck Surgery

Within six months to one year, you will fully recover from tummy tuck surgery and be able to enjoy your results. Your abdomen will be firmer and look more toned, clothing will fit more comfortably, and you will have renewed confidence in your appearance. Tummy tuck results are long lasting if you maintain a healthy lifestyle and stable weight after your surgery.
